Yarrabah’s next generation of health leaders attended the NACCHO Youth Well-being Gathering in Canberra just days ago.
The youth conference is a landmark event that brings together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people from across Australia to share experiences, priorities, and aspirations for mental health and wellbeing.
Our Yarrabah team — including Donnalene, Shaylee, Amazon, Mahlia, and other community representatives — participated in in-depth discussions about youth social and emotional wellbeing, existing programs, and ideas for future initiatives.
Donnalene presented on the priorities of youth in Yarrabah, highlighting the impact of employment, education, housing, and substance abuse on mental health and social wellbeing.
“Attending this gathering has shown just how powerful young voices can be in shaping the future of health and wellbeing in our communities,” Donnalene said.
“It’s inspiring to see the ideas and passion from youth across the country — we’re ready to take that energy back home and make real change.”
Shaylee and the team showcased current programs, such as the Young Persons Check, Youth Hub, Rangers Programs, and PCYC, and proposed new initiatives, including a Young Mums SEWB Program and an LGBTQIA+ hub, aimed at creating inclusive and accessible support networks.
Over the course of the gathering, delegates collaborated with young leaders from across the country to develop a National Youth Wellbeing Campaign, which they presented to the broader group — demonstrating the creativity, vision, and leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth.
The event provided a unique opportunity to connect with like-minded peers, exchange ideas, and share experiences, while also highlighting the urgent need for more social and emotional wellbeing programs for young people in communities nationwide.
The Yarrabah delegation returned inspired, energized, and committed to continuing the work of growing opportunities for youth wellbeing at home and beyond.
