The first day of the Yarrabah Youth Health Festival and Youth Prevention Campaign (YPC) 2026 is now in the books and starting to wrap up with a strong turnout of local young people helping launch one of Yarrabah's most innovative youth-focused health initiatives.
Held at the Bukki Road Clinic, the opening day created a welcoming and vibrant space where Yarrabah youth aged 15 to 30 could connect with friends, engage with support services and learn more about their health and wellbeing in a relaxed, culturally safe environment.
Throughout the day, participants enjoyed a range of activities including basketball, arts and crafts, the popular Juice Bar and opportunities to spend time with staff and other young people. Most importantly, the festival provided a positive setting for young people to access health information and consider taking part in a health check without pressure or judgement.
The Youth Health Festival forms part of Gurriny Yealamucka's six-week Youth Prevention Campaign, which encourages young people to complete a health check, connect with services, return for their results and take positive steps towards healthier futures.
Public Health Team Leader Renee Grosso said the opening day highlighted the importance of creating spaces where young people feel comfortable and supported.
"The festival is designed around young people and what matters to them,” she said.
“Today was about creating a welcoming environment where youth can connect, have fun and engage with health services in ways that feel relevant and meaningful.”
With five weeks still to come, organisers are encouraging more young people to get involved.
The Yarrabah Youth Health Festival continues at the Bukki Road Clinic, with all local youth aged 15 to 30 invited to participate.
