A growing group of Yarrabah youth is taking an important step towards having a stronger voice in the future of their community through the GYHSAC Youth Hub Committee.
The recently established committee came together at a special youth gathering at the Yarrabah Leisure Centre, creating an opportunity for young people to connect, yarn and discuss the issues that matter to them, their families and Yarrabah.
Coordinated by Gurriny Yealamucka Youth Hub team in conjunction with other stakeholders a key focus was supporting the committee to continue developing its capacity, compliance and good governance, while giving young people an opportunity to hear about work already underway and contribute their own ideas, experiences and aspirations.
The Council is continuing to shape its priorities around six key pillars: employment, education, leadership, justice, sport and culture.
These priorities reflect the opportunities Yarrie youth want to see strengthened in Yarrabah and support the community’s broader Closing the Gap charter.
There are currently 11 young people aged 16- 25 involved in the Youth Council, providing a strong starting point for its growth.
More Yarrabah young people aged 16- 25 are now being encouraged to step forward, have their say and become involved.
The committee provides an opportunity to build leadership skills, develop ideas, plan projects and events, and help create positive opportunities for young people across Yarrabah.
